A look at how fashion integrates forms of art to make unique pieces of clothing.

Film

Fashion and film often intersect, through the work of cinematographers. When looking at designer brands, imagery from popular films can be seen printed on the work. A brand which most notably utilizes imagery from cinema is Heaven By Marc Jacobs; listed below are some of the minds behind the films shown on the pieces.

Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola directed the film The Virgin Suicides, based on the novel written by Jefferey Eugenides. Her collaboration with the brand Heaven by Marc Jacobs alluded to the film’s visuals on skirts and tops; see above the skirt modeled.

Elliot Davis

Elliot Davis is the cinematographer for the film Twilight. His camera work on the film can be seen displayed on sweaters, skirts, and all sorts of clothing items, designer or not. A designer brand that features imagery from Twilight is called Praying; see here for one of their pieces featuring imagery from Twilight.

Traditional Art

Eri Wakiyama’s artwork is featured on many high-end fashion lines, such as those of Miu Miu and Heaven by Marc Jacobs. Her manga-inspired paintings can be seen printed on dresses and tops, as shown here. Traditional art, including paintings and pencil drawings, on garments is a simple example of how fashion and the arts mix and shouldn’t be overlooked, as it can be beautifully and impactfully displayed on clothing.

Music

Music can be seen integrated in fashion all over, evident in the many collaborations with musicians that high-end brands often feature. The 90’s shoegaze band Cocteau Twins recently collaborated with Heaven by Marc Jacobs to release pieces inspired by their 1990 album Heaven or Las Vegas; one of their collaboration pieces is pictured here, as a skirt. Acclaimed musician Elton John has collaborated with brand Réalisation Par to release pieces inspired by his work as well; pictured here is a promotional image featuring a modeled dress in this collection. Aside from musicians collaborating with fashion designers, music has an undeniable impact on fashion through music played in advertisements as well as on the runway, setting a mood and enhancing a designer’s vision for their pieces.
